Spiritual Transmission

The passing of an awakened state from teacher to student — inseparable from the relationship in which it occurs.

What it is

What passes between teacher and student

In many traditions, an awakened state is understood to pass from teacher to student. In itself, this transmission is synonymous with the experience of enlightenment — yet the student’s experience is rooted in a living relationship, not in doctrine or technique alone.

Because it happens within a bond, transmission cannot be separated from that bond.

A relational phenomenon

Inseparable from the relationship

Qualitative interviews with teachers and students across traditions explore what actually passes between them — and how much of it is relational, and how much is something else.
